Boundaries and character

Created for the 1983 general election, Elmet covered the far eastern wards of the city of Leeds and surrounding suburban and semi-rural communities in West Yorkshire. It combined commuter suburbs, small towns and agricultural hinterland, producing an electorate with a mixture of urban and rural concerns. The constituency is often described simply as a constituency that blended suburban housing areas with market towns and villages.

Political history

Throughout its existence the seat attracted attention in local and national campaigns because of its mixed demographics. From 1997 until the 2010 general election the MP was Colin Burgon, representing the Labour Party; he chose not to contest the seat at the 2010 poll. The constituency sent one MP to the Parliament of the United Kingdom at each general election and was subject to the regular boundary reviews that can alter local representation.

Elmet was abolished for the 2010 general election after a review of parliamentary boundaries. Its territory was redistributed among new and revised constituencies, most notably forming the basis of the successor seat which included Rothwell and other nearby areas.
