Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent (1301–1330)

Family and position

As a royal son Edmund received land, rank and responsibilities typical for younger princes of the period. He married Margaret Wake, a member of the baronial nobility, and their children included the historically prominent Joan of Kent, later known as the Fair Maid of Kent. Edmund’s rank and family connections placed him at the centre of court politics and regional governance.

Career and political involvement

During the 1320s Edmund was active in the shifting alliances and factional disputes that surrounded Edward II, his half-brother. He held offices and undertook military and administrative duties expected of a noble of his rank. As national politics polarized around favourites, baronial opposition and the queen’s faction, Edmund’s loyalties and actions brought him into conflict with the ruling regency after Edward II was deposed.

In 1330 he was arrested and executed for an alleged plot to restore the deposed king. Contemporary and later accounts differ over the facts and motives; after Edward III seized power later that year, Edmund’s reputation was reassessed and his family’s fortunes improved.
