Boundaries and neighboring communities

Historically the northeastern corner of the old Lake View Township, Edgewater became part of Chicago following annexation in 1889. Today it is bordered by several distinct community areas: to the south is Uptown, to the west lies Lincoln Square, to the northwest is West Ridge, and to the north is Rogers Park. The lakefront location is one of the neighborhood’s defining physical features.

Edgewater contains a mix of housing types: low- and mid-rise apartment buildings, historic courtyard apartments and wood-frame single-family homes.
