Location and boundaries

Rogers Park lies along the lakeshore and is generally bounded by the city of Evanston to the north (Juneway Terrace and Howard Street), Ridge Boulevard to the west, Devon Avenue and the Edgewater neighborhood to the south, and Lake Michigan to the east. It is one of the 77 community areas of Chicago within Cook County. The area immediately west, now known as West Ridge, was historically part of Rogers Park before municipal divisions evolved in the late 19th century.

History and development

Settlement and growth accelerated in the 1800s as transportation to downtown improved and Chicago expanded northward. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Rogers Park developed a mix of residential blocks and small commercial districts. Over time it absorbed waves of immigrants and new residents, which shaped its multilingual, multicultural character.

Rogers Park features shoreline parks and beaches, neighborhood business corridors, and notable institutions. Loyola University Chicago has a campus in the neighborhood that contributes to local cultural and economic life.
