A small team led by Michael E. Brown detected Dysnomia using the adaptive optics system at the W. M. Keck Observatory on September 10, 2005. The satellite follows a nearly circular path around Eris with an orbital period of roughly sixteen days, a geometry that has allowed astronomers to calculate the mass of the Eris–Dysnomia system.
Physical characteristics
Direct measurements of Dysnomia are limited because the object is faint and distant. Size estimates vary with assumptions about surface reflectivity: published values generally place the diameter in the several-hundred-kilometre range, commonly quoted near 600 km but possibly larger if the surface is dark. Its composition is presumed to be a mix of rock and ices, typical of mid-sized trans-Neptunian bodies. Tidal interactions likely synchronize its rotation to its orbit, making one hemisphere face Eris persistently.
