Diesel fuel is a liquid hydrocarbon fuel used in compression-ignition engines. Derived mainly from petroleum, it appears in several grades and blends and is important for transport, industry, and power generation.

Diesel fuel is a liquid hydrocarbon used primarily in compression-ignition (diesel) engines. It is denser and generally less volatile than gasoline, and it is formulated to ignite under high compression rather than by a spark. Composition and production

Most diesel is produced by refining crude petroleum through fractional distillation and further processing such as hydrotreating and cracking. Modern fuel may also contain additives for stability, detergency, and cold-weather performance. Renewable alternatives such as biodiesel and hydrotreated vegetable oil are made from biological or synthetic feedstocks and can be blended with conventional diesel.

Properties and common forms

The physical and chemical characteristics of diesel determine its performance. It typically has a higher energy density than gasoline, a higher flash point, and different viscosity. Commercial variants include standard automotive diesel, off-road diesel, marine diesel, and low-sulfur or ultra-low-sulfur diesel required by many regulations. In some contexts the term diesel oil is used interchangeably.

History and naming

The name comes from inventor Rudolf Diesel, who developed the compression-ignition engine in the late 19th century. His design led to the widespread adoption of the diesel engine in heavy transport, ships, and industrial equipment because of its efficiency, torque characteristics, and fuel economy compared with spark-ignition engines of the same era.

Uses and importance

Diesel is central to many sectors because of its energy density and engine efficiency. Common uses include:

  • Road freight and long-haul trucking
  • Rail locomotives and marine propulsion
  • Construction, mining, and agricultural machinery
  • Backup and primary electricity generation in power plants

Standards, impacts and distinctions

Fuel standards regulate sulfur content, cetane number (ignition quality), and permitted additives. Environmental concerns focus on emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, and greenhouse gases. Advances include low-sulfur diesel, particulate filters, selective catalytic reduction systems, and increasing use of biodiesel blends to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions. Diesel remains distinguished by its use in compression-ignition engines and its role in heavy-duty applications where energy efficiency and torque are priorities.
