Dharahara (Bhimsen Tower) — landmark tower of Kathmandu

Dharahara, also known as Bhimsen Tower, was a historic nine‑storey tower in central Kathmandu built in 1832. It served as a prominent viewpoint and cultural symbol until its collapse in the 2015 earthquake.

Dharahara (also called the Bhimsen Tower) was a prominent multi‑storey tower located in the Sundhara area at the heart of Kathmandu. Erected in 1832 by the then‑powerful prime minister Bhimsen Thapa, the tower rose to a height of about 61.88 metres and was one of the city’s best known landmarks and viewing points.

Design and features

The tower had nine storeys and a narrow internal staircase leading to an observation level near the top. From its upper balcony visitors could see broad panoramas of the Kathmandu Valley. Constructed in masonry with ornamental detailing, it combined practical use as a lookout with symbolic value as a civic monument.

History and development

Built in the early 19th century, Dharahara served both as a navigational landmark within the dense city and as a focal point for local identity. Over its life it suffered damage in seismic events and underwent repairs and restoration work at different times. It remained a popular destination for residents and tourists alike.

2015 earthquake and aftermath

On 25 April 2015 a major earthquake struck Nepal and Dharahara suffered catastrophic collapse. The event destroyed the historic tower and caused loss of life and widespread shock in the community. In the years after the disaster, clearance of the site and plans for rebuilding and memorialisation were carried out as part of broader heritage recovery efforts.

Cultural importance and legacy

Beyond its architectural presence, Dharahara had become an icon of Kathmandu — widely photographed and frequently used as a symbol in maps, postcards and cultural references. Its destruction sparked national and international attention on Nepal’s historic urban fabric and the challenges of protecting heritage in seismic regions.
