Dera Ismail Khan Division

Location and composition

The division lay within the province now known as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and formed part of the national territory of Pakistan. Administratively it grouped districts for coordination of services, planning and law enforcement. At the time the divisional tier was abolished, Dera Ismail Khan Division contained two districts:

• Dera Ismail Khan District — the division's namesake and principal district.
• Tank District — a smaller neighbouring district to the north or west of the divisional centre.

History and administrative change

During the late 20th century the boundaries and composition of many divisions were periodically adjusted. Until the 1990s the larger Dera Ismail Khan administrative area also encompassed the region later separated as Bannu Division. A nationwide reorganisation of local government in 2000 formally abolished the third tier of government — divisions — and transferred many responsibilities to district-level authorities and newly formed local bodies; the reforms are discussed in summaries of the 2000 local government reforms.

Significance and legacy

Although the divisional tier no longer exists in the same form, historical divisions like Dera Ismail Khan remain relevant for understanding older administrative records, statistical reporting and regional identity. They shaped patterns of resource allocation, judicial jurisdictions and development planning for decades, and many contemporary administrative maps and historical accounts continue to reference the former divisional boundaries.
