Members and roles

On November 4, 2008, bassist Chi Cheng was seriously injured in a car accident that left him in long-term care. During his recovery period, Sergio Vega toured and recorded with the band. Cheng never fully recovered and died in April 2013. The band and its fan community marked this period with benefit shows, updates on Cheng's condition and continued support for his family. Deftones returned to recording and performing, carrying that experience into their later work.
