Recording and personnel

The recordings were taken from several concerts on the 1987–88 tour and assembled into a continuous live sequence. The band at this time was led by David Gilmour with Nick Mason and the returning Rick Wright as touring member; additional musicians augmented the sound with bass, keyboards, saxophone and backing vocals to recreate and expand the studio arrangements.

Music and arrangements

The album features lengthy, live-oriented versions of well known songs alongside newer tracks. Many pieces were rearranged for the stage, with extended guitar solos, expanded keyboard parts and more prominent backing vocals. These changes underline how the group adapted its studio work for large-scale arena performances.

Release, formats and reissues

Initially issued as a double LP and on CD, Delicate Sound of Thunder was also accompanied by a concert film documenting the same tour. Over time the recordings have been remastered and reissued to improve clarity and to restore aspects of the original performances that were edited for early formats.

Reception and legacy

The album was commercially successful and helped define the live identity of Pink Floyd after the departure of Roger Waters. It remains an important live document for fans interested in the band’s late-1980s stage shows and the evolving interpretations of their catalogue.
