Gruber began performing professionally in the early 1970s. He gained prominence as the bass player in Elf, a band that included Ronnie James Dio, Mickey Lee Soule, Gary Driscoll and David Feinstein. Members of Elf worked together on recordings and live dates that attracted wider attention, and several of them went on to collaborate with more established artists.

When Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple he formed Rainbow and recruited Dio along with some musicians from Elf. Craig Gruber is credited as the original bassist in that formative Rainbow lineup and played on the group's early material and sessions.
