Coronagraph (instrument for observing faint structures near bright stars)
A coronagraph is an optical device used with telescopes to block a bright star (most often the Sun) so faint nearby features — the solar corona, dust, or exoplanets — can be studied.

The basic idea is to place an occulting disk or mask at an intermediate image plane to block the bright stellar disk. Additional optical stops and filters reduce diffracted and scattered light. A successful coronagraph minimizes stray light and diffraction so faint corona, scattered dust, or a nearby planet can be recorded. Modern designs combine masks, pupil stops, and wavefront control to improve contrast.
History and development
The coronagraph was pioneered in the early 20th century to let astronomers observe the solar corona without waiting for a total solar eclipse. Ground-based and spaceborne implementations have evolved to handle atmospheric scattering and instrument diffraction. Advances in optics, detectors and adaptive wavefront control expanded coronagraphy into high-contrast astronomy.
Types and components
- Occulting mask: blocks the bright source in the image plane.
- Lyot stop: reduces diffracted light in a downstream pupil plane.
- External occulter / starshade: a separate spacecraft or large screen placed far from the telescope.
- Phase-mask and coronagraphic variants: manipulate phase rather than amplitude to cancel starlight.
Combination with adaptive optics and space platforms achieves the highest contrasts, allowing detection of features many magnitudes fainter than the central star.
Uses and significance
Solar coronagraphs reveal the structure and dynamics of the corona and track coronal mass ejections and streamers. In planetary and stellar astronomy, coronagraphs are key tools for direct imaging of dust disks and exoplanets by reducing glare from the host star. They remain important in instrument development for future space telescopes aimed at characterizing Earth-like planets.
