Classical conditioning (Pavlovian conditioning)
A learning process in which a neutral stimulus becomes associated with an automatic response; foundational experiments were performed by Ivan Pavlov and the phenomenon underpins many behaviors and therapies.
Overview
Classical conditioning, often called Pavlovian conditioning, is a form of associative learning in which a previously neutral stimulus comes to elicit a response after being paired with a stimulus that naturally produces that response. The change is typically automatic or reflex-like rather than the result of deliberate decision-making. An unconditioned stimulus naturally evokes a reaction (for example, food causing salivation); the reaction it elicits is the unconditioned response. A stimulus that initially produces no particular response is called a neutral stimulus; after repeated pairings with the unconditioned stimulus it becomes a conditioned stimulus and evokes the conditioned response. Historical demonstration
The most famous early demonstration was carried out by Ivan Pavlov, who worked with dogs and observed that the animals began to salivate upon cues that had been associated with food. Pavlov noticed the pattern of salivation and systematically paired food with neutral events such as a bell sound; after repeated pairings the bell alone produced salivation. His experiments provided a clear, repeatable description of how associative learning can reshape reflexive behavior.
