Military service and actions

Kettles trained and operated as an Army aviator in the 1960s, flying assault and resupply missions in an airmobile era when helicopters transformed ground operations. He served as a flight commander with the 176th Aviation Company (Airmobile) (Light), 14th Combat Aviation Battalion, Americal Division. During his Vietnam service he executed repeated combat missions under hazardous conditions to support infantry units, recover wounded soldiers, and extract troops when ground movement was restricted by enemy fire.

Medal of Honor and recognition

On July 18, 2016, nearly fifty years after the events in Vietnam for which he was cited, Charles Kettles was awarded the Medal of Honor. The award acknowledged conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty. The delayed recognition drew public attention to how acts of valor from past conflicts are sometimes reassessed and honored years later.

Later life and legacy

After retiring from active duty, Kettles lived in Michigan. He remained involved with veterans' affairs and aviation communities and was frequently recognized in public commemorations of Vietnam veterans. He died in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on January 21, 2019, at age 89. His career is remembered both for tactical skill as an Army aviator and for the moral example his conduct provided to fellow service members.
