Centrosaurus is a genus of herbivorous, horned dinosaurs within the ceratopsian group that lived during the later part of the Upper Cretaceous. Its fossils are primarily known from deposits in western Canada, in particular the province of Alberta. Centrosaurus combined a robust, quadrupedal body with a broad skull, a projecting nasal horn and a posterior frill bearing distinctive ornamentation. Anatomy and variation

Centrosaurus had a large, beaked snout and shearing dental batteries suited to processing fibrous vegetation. A single, often prominent nasal horn is characteristic of many specimens, while supraorbital (brow) horns tended to be reduced or modest in size. The parietosquamosal frill at the rear of the skull was edged with a variety of knobs, hooks and small spikes; these features vary with age and between individuals, and they likely played roles in display, species recognition or intraspecific competition. Limb bones show a sturdy, columnar build consistent with supporting a heavy body and a relatively low browsing posture.

Growth and ontogeny

Fossil assemblages include individuals at different life stages, from juveniles to fully mature adults. Studies of bone texture and horn development indicate that ornamentation changed during growth: nasal horns and frill ornamentation generally became more pronounced as animals matured. These ontogenetic patterns have been used to interpret sexual maturity, social roles and how variation among specimens should be interpreted taxonomically.

Fossil occurrences and bonebeds

Centrosaurus is especially well represented in the Dinosaur Park Formation and closely related sediments of Alberta. Paleontologists have recovered material from multiple localities, including extensive mass accumulations in Dinosaur Provincial Park. One of the most famous concentrations, near the town of Hilda in Alberta, is often called the Hilda mega-bonebed; it contains thousands of bones and many individuals, and is regarded as among the largest known single concentrations of dinosaur remains. Several bonebeds extend for hundreds of meters and include mixed ages and partial to near-complete skeletons.

Causes of mass mortality

Researchers interpret the large, monospecific bonebeds as evidence that Centrosaurus formed large herds. The taphonomic patterns—articulated remains mixed with disarticulated bones, orientation of elements and associated sediments—are consistent with catastrophic events. A commonly proposed scenario is that herds were overwhelmed by flooding while attempting to cross rivers or were caught by sudden storms, producing mass mortality assemblages that were later buried and preserved in the sedimentary record.

Paleoecology and behavior

As a relatively common herbivore of its environment, Centrosaurus shared its ecosystem with other dinosaurs, small vertebrates and a diverse flora of the Campanian age. Herding would have offered protection against predators and may have aided seasonal or local migrations to track food resources. Feeding adaptations suggest a diet of low-growing plants, forbs, ferns and possibly tougher vegetation that could be processed by its jaws and dental batteries.

Taxonomy and research history

The taxonomic history of Centrosaurus has evolved as new material and analyses accumulated. Early fossil discoveries in Alberta were sometimes placed in related genera; material once assigned to Monoclonius has in many cases been reinterpreted and reassigned to Centrosaurus or other ceratopsians as study refined diagnostic characters. The genus was recognized as distinct by early twentieth-century researchers and continues to be revised with modern comparative and cladistic techniques.
