Administration and municipalities

Central Bosnia Canton is subdivided into municipalities that perform local government functions. Its territory includes a mix of urban centers and rural communities. The canton contains the following municipalities:

Population and demographics

According to the 2013 census census, the canton had 273,149 residents. The reported population density was 85.65/km² 85.65/km², which corresponds to an area on the order of a few thousand square kilometres. The population is multiethnic and multilingual, with Bosniaks, Croats and Serbs among the main groups; Bosnian and Croatian are commonly spoken alongside other local variants of the South Slavic languages.

History and development

The cantonal system, including Central Bosnia Canton, was established following the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement as part of the Federation’s approach to decentralised governance. The area has a layered history: Ottoman-era towns, Austro-Hungarian influences, industrial development in the 20th century, and significant changes during and after the 1990s conflict. Some towns, such as Jajce and Travnik, preserve important medieval and early modern heritage.

Economy, culture and notable places

The local economy combines light industry, agriculture, forestry and services. Tourism is growing around historic towns, monasteries, thermal springs and natural landscapes that attract visitors for cultural and outdoor pursuits. Fojnica is known for its Franciscan heritage and spa traditions, Jajce for its waterfalls and medieval sites, and Travnik for its fortress and Ottoman-era architecture.
