Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
One of the two political entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, composed of ten cantons with shared and devolved institutions; formed in the 1990s to accommodate Bosniak and Croat communities.
The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the two main political entities of the sovereign state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Created during the peace processes of the 1990s, it functions as a largely autonomous federal unit with its own institutions, constitution, and seat of government in Sarajevo. The entity is commonly abbreviated as FB&H or FBiH.

Geographically the Federation covers much of the central and southwestern part of the country. Instead of a single centralized provincial government, the Federation is divided into ten cantons, each with its own government and a substantial degree of autonomy. That cantonal arrangement was adopted to allow local control over many public services and to accommodate different ethnic majorities in particular areas.
Political institutions and languages
The Federation maintains its own executive and legislative bodies: a president (with two vice-presidents), a bicameral parliament, and a government responsible for entity-level affairs. The political system combines shared decision-making at the Federation level with powers reserved to the cantons. The entity recognizes Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian as official languages; see language entries for Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian.
History and development
The Federation emerged from agreements reached during the Bosnian war era. In 1994 the Washington Agreement established a Bosniak–Croat federation, and the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords incorporated that federation as one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's two entities. Since then, governance has evolved through constitutional arrangements and international oversight, while ongoing reforms have aimed at improving cooperation between entity and state institutions.

Importance and contemporary issues
The Federation plays a central role in Bosnia and Herzegovina's politics, economy and intercommunal relations. It contains significant urban centers, cultural institutions, and most of the country's industrial and service economy. At the same time, the complex multi-layered governance—entity, cantonal and municipal—poses ongoing challenges for administrative efficiency, interethnic cooperation, and reform efforts aimed at strengthening the national institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
