Overview
Billy Joe "B. J." Thomas (August 7, 1942 – May 29, 2021) was an American singer whose career spanned pop, country and contemporary religious music. Born in Hugo, Oklahoma, he achieved mainstream success in the late 1960s and 1970s with a series of crossover hits and later became a well-known figure in Christian music.
Early life and career
Thomas began singing as a teenager and worked with local bands and recording studios before breaking into the national charts. His accessible vocal style and ability to move between pop and country idioms helped him gain airplay on multiple radio formats throughout the 1970s. He recorded for several labels and developed a reputation for warm, relaxed phrasing and careful song interpretation.
Breakthrough hits
Among Thomas's best-known recordings are his 1968 hit version of "Hooked on a Feeling" and his 1969 rendition of "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," the latter featured in the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. These songs became signature pieces in his catalog and are often cited among his notable songs. Other charting singles helped sustain his visibility on pop and adult contemporary playlists into the early 1970s.
Shift to Christian music and recognition
In the late 1970s and into the 1980s, Thomas increasingly recorded contemporary Christian material and performed in both secular and religious settings. That period brought him industry recognition in the inspirational and gospel fields; he earned several Grammy Awards and other honors for his work in Christian and inspirational music in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Later life, health and death
Thomas continued to tour and record intermittently, and his songs have been used in films, television and compilations. In March 2021 he announced a diagnosis of stage-4 lung cancer. He died from the illness on May 29, 2021, in Arlington, Texas, at the age of 78.
