Lynne Janice Kosky (2 September 1958 – 4 December 2014) was an Australian politician who represented the state electoral district of Altona in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1996 until 2010. A member of the Australian Labor Party, she became a prominent figure in state government and was widely recognised for her work in education and transport policy.
Overview
Kosky entered state politics after a background in community and union work. During her parliamentary career she served as a senior minister in the Bracks and Brumby administrations, holding major portfolios that shaped school funding, training programs and metropolitan public transport planning. Her service made her a well-known public figure in Victoria and within the ALP.
Political career and roles
After winning Altona in 1996 she rose through the parliamentary ranks to take on ministerial responsibilities. She held senior education responsibilities, overseeing policies affecting primary, secondary and vocational training sectors, and later led the public transport portfolio, where she focused on network performance and system management. For an official profile see the Victorian Parliament page and party biography pages such as the Australian Labor Party information site.
Initiatives and focus
Kosky’s ministerial work emphasised stronger public investment in schools and training, efforts to improve access to vocational education, and initiatives to address public transport reliability and customer service. While specific programs evolved under successive governments, her tenure is associated with efforts to link education and skills policy to labour market needs and to modernise parts of metropolitan transport management.
Legacy and retirement
She retired from parliament in 2010, citing family reasons for her departure. Colleagues and commentators noted her energy and commitment to public service. Her career is often discussed in the context of late-20th and early-21st century Victorian reform agendas; further commentary and retrospectives are available in news archives and obituaries such as contemporary reports and feature pieces at local media.
Death and remembrance
Lynne Kosky died in Melbourne on 4 December 2014 from breast cancer at the age of 56. Her passing prompted tributes from political colleagues, community groups and education and transport sector stakeholders.
