Western Washington rivers tend to be shorter, steeper and rain-fed, with high seasonal flows and important salmon runs. The Olympic Peninsula contains many short coastal rivers that run swiftly from mountains to sea. In contrast, eastern Washington is dominated by longer rivers of the Columbia basin: these streams rise in mountains or across the interior plateau and are heavily managed for irrigation, hydropower and flood control.

In recent decades some river restoration projects, including removal of obsolete dams, have aimed to recover spawning habitat and riverine ecosystems.
