Overview
The phrase "nearest galaxies" refers to galaxies outside the Sun's host star system and often outside the Milky Way, ranked by distance from Earth. Because Earth lies within the Milky Way, the nearest external systems typically include the Milky Way's satellite galaxies and other members of the Local Group. Distance estimates are usually expressed in light years; see light-year for the unit.

Astronomers use several methods to estimate galaxy distances: standard candles (Cepheid variable stars, Type Ia supernovae), the tip of the red giant branch, and redshift for more distant systems. For the faint dwarf satellites around the Milky Way the most reliable measures come from resolved stellar populations. Nevertheless, many nearby distances remain uncertain because of reddening by dust, tidal disruption, or ambiguous membership.
Typical nearest galaxies (annotated)
- Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) — a prominent satellite of the Milky Way at roughly a few ×10^5 light years; visible to the naked eye in the southern hemisphere.
- Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) — another bright Milky Way companion, somewhat farther than the LMC by tens of thousands of light years.
- Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal — a disrupted satellite currently being tidally stripped by the Milky Way; its streams pass relatively close to the Sun.
- Classical dwarf spheroidals (Draco, Ursa Minor, Sculptor, Fornax, Sextans and others) — faint satellites at distances of some tens to several hundred thousand light years.
- Leo I and Leo II — more distant Local Group dwarfs, typically hundreds of thousands to about a million light years away.
- Andromeda (M31) — the nearest large spiral galaxy, about 2.5 million light years away and the dominant mass of the Local Group besides the Milky Way.
- Triangulum (M33) — a smaller spiral in the Local Group at a distance similar to Andromeda, often listed among the closest major galaxies.
- Obscured neighbors (Maffei group, IC 342) — lie behind the Milky Way plane and are harder to measure accurately; they are generally several million light years distant.
Why the list changes
New surveys and improved distance indicators periodically revise which galaxies are ranked as nearest. Discoveries of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, better accounting for tidal debris, and refinements in stellar distance scales can alter orderings and even whether an object is counted as a distinct galaxy or a tidal fragment.
Scientific importance and distinctions
Nearby galaxies serve as laboratories for galaxy formation, dark matter studies, and stellar evolution because individual stars can be resolved. Distinctions among the nearest objects matter: major spirals like Andromeda and Triangulum are large, self-gravitating systems, while many of the very nearest companions are low-mass dwarf galaxies or tidal remnants. Understanding their distances and motions informs models of the Local Group's past and future, including the expected Milky Way–Andromeda interaction.
