Life and ecclesiastical career

Paskai was born in 1927 and entered the Franciscan order as a young man. He was ordained to the priesthood and later advanced to the episcopate, serving in a variety of pastoral and administrative roles before his appointment as archbishop in 1987. In the late 1980s he was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II, becoming one of Hungary's most prominent Catholic leaders.

As Archbishop of Esztergom–Budapest (the principal see in Hungary) Paskai combined diocesan governance with national responsibilities.
