Joseph "Erap" Ejército Estrada (born José Marcelo Ejército; April 19, 1937) is a Filipino public figure known for a career that spans entertainment and politics. He rose to national prominence as a film actor and later entered elective office, becoming the thirteenth President of the Philippines. He has also held other major posts in government and local administration.

Overview

Estrada began his public life in cinema, where his on-screen persona as a champion of the poor helped build a wide popular base. He later translated that popularity into electoral success and served at the highest levels of government. His political identity combines populist appeals with a background in both local and national offices.

Political career and offices

Estrada was elected Vice President of the Philippines and served in that role from 1992 until 1998. In 1998 he won the presidency and held office until 2001. His career also includes many years in local government prior to national office, notably in a long-running municipal role that helped establish his grassroots support. He later returned to urban politics and was elected Mayor of Manila in 2013.

Estrada's presidency emphasized pro-poor rhetoric and resource programs aimed at disadvantaged communities, but his term was cut short by mass protests and a political crisis in 2001 that forced him from office. He faced impeachment proceedings and criminal charges of corruption. Years after his removal he was tried and convicted on a plunder charge, a conviction that attracted broad attention and debate. He was later granted executive clemency, enabling his return to public life and electoral politics.

Later years and legacy

After his pardon, Estrada remained an active figure in Philippine politics. He ran again for higher office and then focused on city government, winning the mayoralty of the capital in 2013. His life and career remain controversial and influential: he is remembered for a rare trajectory from entertainment stardom to the presidency, for the popular support he commanded, and for the constitutional and legal issues that marked the end of his presidency.
