Overview
Jim Varney (June 15, 1949 – February 10, 2000) was an American performer who worked as a stand-up comedian, character actor, writer and voice artist. He came to national attention through a brash, homespun persona that began in regional advertising and later became a fixture of television and family films. Varney was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky and lived much of his life in the American South.
Ernest and performance style
Varney is most closely associated with the comic character Ernest P. Worrell, a rambling, enthusiastic man who spoke directly to an unseen character called "Vern." Ernest originated in short local commercials and was defined by loud, physical comedy, a nasal voice, and catchphrases that made the figure instantly recognizable. The character's broad, accessible humor helped Varney cross from advertising into TV and movies.
Career highlights
After the commercial appearances, Varney expanded Ernest into a syndicated television series, Hey Vern, It's Ernest!, and a string of family-oriented feature films including titles that became cult favorites, such as Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, and Ernest Scared Stupid. Beyond Ernest, Varney performed in theater, did stand-up, and provided voice work for animated projects. Notably, he voiced Slinky Dog in the original Toy Story (1995).
Legacy and later life
Varney's work is remembered for its combination of slapstick and character-driven humor that appealed to children and family audiences. He continued to appear in projects that showcased both Ernest and other roles until his death from lung cancer in White House, Tennessee, on February 10, 2000. His portrayal of Ernest remains a reference point in American pop culture for late 20th-century family comedy.
