Early life and military service

Webb grew up in the Midwest and came of age during the Vietnam era. He served in the United States Marine Corps and saw combat in Vietnam; his experiences there influenced his later writing and public life. After leaving active duty he worked in journalism and government, combining an interest in policy with a parallel career as a novelist and essayist.

Political and government career

Webb served as Secretary of the Navy from 1987 to 1988 under President Ronald Reagan, a position in which he focused on personnel and morale issues within the naval services.
