Ignaz Kirchner (born Hanns-Peter Kirchner-Wierichs; 13 July 1946 – 26 September 2018) was a German actor best known for a long career on the German-language stage. Praised for his versatility, he performed leading and character roles in classical drama, modern plays, and dark comedies. He achieved particular recognition for several Shakespearean and contemporary parts and for stage partnerships that won critical attention.
Career and notable parts
Kirchner’s repertoire ranged from Shakespeare to 20th-century avant-garde theatre. Among his better-known stage portrayals were classical roles such as Antonio in Shakespeare’s drama (Antonio) and the scheming Iago — often billed as Jago in German productions (Jago / Iago). He was equally at home in modern and black-comic works: he performed in George Tabori’s Goldbergvariationen, taking on the parts of Goldberg and Mr. Jay; he appeared in Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys (Neil Simon), Samuel Beckett’s Endgame (Samuel Beckett) and Jean Genet’s The Maids (Die Zofen).
Style and reception
Critics highlighted Kirchner’s facility for dark comedy and his economical, often dry delivery. He could convey menace or absurdity with small shifts in tone. His collaborations with fellow actors brought additional attention: several productions paired him with prominent colleagues, and the duo involving Gert Voss was particularly celebrated. For his stage work, he and his partner were awarded the title Schauspielerpaar des Jahres (Actor Pair of the Year) twice, in 1992 and 1998, an acknowledgment from theatre critics of their impact on the German-speaking stage.
Life, death and legacy
Born Hanns-Peter Kirchner-Wierichs, he adopted the professional name Ignaz Kirchner and built a career that remained focused on theatre, with occasional film and television appearances. Kirchner died in Vienna after a long illness on 26 September 2018 (Vienna), aged 72. His work is remembered for its range — from classical tragedy to mordant comedy — and for the way he shaped ensemble productions through precise character work. Recordings and reviews of his stage performances continue to be cited when discussing German-language theatre of the late 20th century.
