Helle Thorning-Schmidt (born 14 December 1966) is a Danish politician best known for serving as the leader of the Social Democrats and for becoming Denmark's first female prime minister. Her election to the premiership in 2011 marked a milestone in Danish politics. She led a centre-left government until 2015 and remained an important public figure both in Denmark and internationally.

Early career and rise

Thorning-Schmidt entered politics after working in various public and private roles. She served as a Member of the European Parliament before returning to national politics, where she rose through the ranks of the Social Democrats. In 2005 she became the party's leader and worked to broaden its appeal ahead of national elections.

Prime ministership (2011–2015)

As prime minister, Thorning-Schmidt headed a coalition that pursued centre-left priorities such as welfare reform, employment policies and public sector management. Her government combined pragmatic economic measures with traditional social democratic concerns. Her time in office was notable for coalition-building across smaller parties and for navigating the complex parliamentary landscape of Denmark.

Later roles and public profile

After the 2015 election she stepped down from party leadership and left government. She later moved into international and non-governmental work, including a prominent role leading an international child welfare organisation. Outside politics she has attracted attention for her international profile and private life; she is married to Stephen Kinnock and they have children.
