Born on 23 December 1939 in Springs, then part of Transvaal and today within the province of Gauteng, Lee moved to Australia in 1970 with her husband, actor Garth Meade, seeking broader opportunities in the entertainment industry. The marriage ended in divorce in 1976. She lived much of her later life in Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, and died there on 19 September 2014 at the age of 74.
