Devonté "Dev" Hynes (born 23 December 1985) is a British singer, songwriter and producer who performs under several monikers, most prominently Lightspeed Champion and Blood Orange. He was born and raised in Ilford, in London. Over two decades Hynes has moved between band projects, solo releases and production work for other artists, earning attention for his melodic songwriting and genre-crossing arrangements.
Career overview
Hynes first reached notice as a member of the short-lived dance-punk trio Test Icicles, which released the album For Screening Purposes Only before disbanding in 2006. He then launched a solo career as Lightspeed Champion, releasing Falling Off the Lavender Bridge (2008), and later adopted the Blood Orange identity for records that drew on R&B, soul and electronic textures. Notable Blood Orange albums include Cupid Deluxe (2013), Freetown Sound (2016) and Negro Swan (2018).
Style and themes
Hynes's music resists easy categorization, combining elements of indie rock, funk, queer R&B and synthpop. He often foregrounds intimate vocals, layered arrangements and lyrical themes addressing race, sexuality and belonging. Hynes has described experiencing synesthesia, a sensory condition that links sounds and colors; this cross-sensory perspective has influenced his choices in production and arrangement.

Other projects and public presence
Beyond albums, Hynes has worked in visual and written media: in 2008 he published a small comic book project referenced in his creative timeline (comic book). He has also spoken publicly about how perception and creativity intersect; for example, he delivered a TED Talk in Canada about his experience of synesthesia. These appearances underline his interest in how identity, neurology and art inform one another.
Hynes is widely regarded as a thoughtful and innovative figure in contemporary music. His work as a performer and behind the scenes has influenced a younger generation of artists who blend genres and foreground personal narratives in popular song.
