Overview
Charles Peete "Charlie" Rose, Jr. (born January 5, 1942) is an American television interviewer and journalist. He became widely known for a nightly interview program that featured long-form conversations with figures from politics, business, science, the arts and culture. Rose's work combined in-depth questioning with a conversational, low-key style.
Early life and education
Rose was born in Henderson, North Carolina, and attended Duke University. He began his career in journalism after completing his studies and worked in a variety of broadcast roles before establishing his own interview program. His background included both reporting and producing for public and commercial outlets.
Television career and program format
Beginning in 1991, Rose hosted the interview series that bore his name; it was produced for public television and later distributed more widely. The show was noted for its intimate set — often a table with two chairs and subdued lighting — and for interviews that ranged from half-hour to much longer conversations. Guests included heads of state, corporate leaders, academics, writers and entertainers.
- Focus on long-form, one-on-one interviews.
- Unscripted, conversational tone intended to explore ideas and personal experience.
- Wide variety of guests and topical subjects.
Controversy and aftermath
In November 2017, following published accounts by multiple women alleging sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior, several broadcasters and partners ended their relationships with Rose and his program was cancelled. The revelations prompted industry-wide discussions about workplace conduct in media. Rose issued a public statement in response to the reports and has since remained largely out of mainstream broadcasting work.
Reception and legacy
Over decades, Rose was recognized for shaping a recognizable interview style that influenced television journalism. At the same time, the 2017 allegations profoundly altered his reputation and professional standing. Discussions of his career now typically treat his interviewing work and the misconduct allegations together when assessing his impact on media and public discourse.
