Bill O'Herlihy (26 September 1938 – 25 May 2015) was a prominent Irish television presenter and public relations professional whose career spanned nearly five decades. He became one of the best-known voices and faces of sports broadcasting in Ireland while working for Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). O'Herlihy combined studio presentation with on-location tournament coverage and was widely associated with major international sporting events through the later 20th and early 21st centuries.

Career and broadcasting style

O'Herlihy began his media work in the mid-1960s and rose quickly within Irish broadcasting. He presented a broad mix of programming: from current affairs to sport. He was a regular presenter on programmes such as Newsbeat and 7 Days earlier in his career, before concentrating on sport. In sport, he became particularly identified with football and multi-sport events. Over his career he fronted coverage for ten FIFA World Cups (World Cups) and ten editions of the Summer Olympic Games (Olympic Games), a longevity that marked him out in international sports broadcasting.

Major assignments and roles

  • Longstanding studio presenter and interviewer for domestic and international sport.
  • On-site host and reporter during finals and major tournaments for RTÉ and associated broadcasts.
  • Contributor to current affairs output earlier in his career, demonstrating versatility beyond sport.
  • Worked outside broadcasting as a public relations executive, bringing media and communications experience to corporate and event contexts.

Personal background and later life

Born in the Glasheen area of Cork, O'Herlihy balanced a busy public career with family life. He was married to Hilary and they had two daughters, Jill and Sally. In 2007 he underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his colon, a health episode he made public at the time. After a long and visible career he announced his retirement in 2014 and passed away the following year in Dublin on 25 May 2015.

Legacy and recognition

O'Herlihy is remembered as one of Ireland's most experienced and consistent broadcasters. His calm, practiced studio manner and ability to guide viewers through complex sporting events won him a wide audience. He helped set a professional standard for presentation in Irish sports media and mentored colleagues across generations. Contemporary accounts note both his longevity—beginning in 1965—and his role as a familiar presence for viewers during international competitions.

Distinctions and notable facts

Although he worked across genres, O'Herlihy's name is most often linked with sport. His decade-by-decade presence at both the FIFA World Cup and the Summer Olympics is frequently cited as an example of sustained achievement in live event broadcasting. Outside of television, his parallel work in public relations reflected a broader engagement with media and communications in Ireland.
