Bijelo Polje (Serbian Cyrillic: Бијело Поље) is a town in northeastern Montenegro and the administrative centre of the surrounding municipality. Situated on the Lim river, it functions as a regional hub for administration, education, commerce and services in North Montenegro. The town reported a population of 15,883 at the 2011 census and lies at roughly 43.04°N, 19.75°E.

Geography and setting

Located in the Lim valley, Bijelo Polje occupies a strategic inland position between mountainous areas to the south and the river corridor that connects the region to neighbouring states. The valley location shapes the local climate, land use and transport routes, and gives the town access to riverine and road corridors toward central Montenegro and beyond. The surrounding landscape includes agricultural land, wooded hills and upland pastures.

History and development

The settlement has a long, layered history reflecting the wider dynamics of the western Balkans. Over centuries the town has experienced cultural and political influences from medieval Balkan polities, the Ottoman period, and modern Montenegrin state development. Today it combines traces of older architecture with post‑war and contemporary municipal infrastructure, reflecting gradual urban growth and regional administrative consolidation.

Population, culture and religion

Bijelo Polje is home to a culturally diverse population, with communities that speak Montenegrin/Serbian and other South Slavic languages. Religious life is plural: both Orthodox Christian churches and Islamic mosques are present, reflecting the town's mixed heritage. Local cultural life includes traditional music, seasonal festivals and community events that draw visitors from surrounding areas.

Economy, education and transport

The local economy combines services, small‑scale industry, agriculture and trade. As the principal town in the north, it hosts secondary schools, vocational institutions and public services that serve the municipal area. Transport links follow the Lim corridor: regional roads, bus connections and rail links help connect Bijelo Polje with larger Montenegrin cities and cross‑border markets.

Attractions and significance

While not a large tourist centre, Bijelo Polje acts as an important regional marketplace and cultural node. Visitors come for riverside promenades, local markets, historical neighbourhoods and nearby natural areas suited to hiking and rural tourism.
