Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini — Swazi business leader and tenth Prime Minister

Early life and business career

Dlamini trained and worked in business and corporate management in Eswatini and the region. He rose to prominence as the chief executive of the local unit of a multinational mobile operator, often described in reports as MTN Swaziland. Under his leadership the company focused on expanding mobile services and digital products in the country. His background in the private sector shaped his reputation as a manager with experience in telecommunications and corporate governance.

Prime ministership

On 27 October 2018 the monarch, King Mswati III, announced Dlamini's selection as prime minister at a gathering held at the royal kraal in Lobamba. His appointment made him the nation's tenth prime minister. Observers noted that his selection reflected a preference for a leader with business experience during a period when the government emphasized economic management and service delivery. As head of government, Dlamini carried responsibilities for leading the cabinet and implementing policies under the constitutional monarchy.

Illness and death

In November 2020 Dlamini tested positive for the illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Official announcements stated he had tested positive on 15 November 2020 and developed symptoms that required medical care; he was reported to have been hospitalized eight days after the positive test. The government confirmed his diagnosis with COVID-19, and he was subsequently transferred for treatment. Dlamini died on 13 December 2020 at a hospital in South Africa at the age of 52. His passing while in office triggered constitutional provisions for an acting head of government.

Following his death the deputy was named to serve in an acting capacity; the nation's constitution limits the duration of such interim service.
