Overview
Zaharije Trnavčević (Serbian Cyrillic: Захарије Трнавчевић; 2 January 1926 – 13 January 2016) was a Serbian journalist and later a politician. Born in the city of Šabac, he spent many years in media before entering formal politics late in life. He became president of the political party Rich Serbia in 2011 and served as a member of the National Assembly after the 2012 elections. For a short period at the opening of the new legislature he acted as President of the National Assembly of Serbia, from 31 May 2012 to 23 July 2012.
Journalism and public life
Trnavčević built a long career in journalism and public commentary, becoming a familiar name to readers and viewers across Serbia. He worked in various journalistic roles over multiple decades and was known for engaging with social and political topics. His media background shaped his public profile and provided a platform when he later moved into party politics.
Political activity and roles
In 2011 Trnavčević took leadership of Rich Serbia, a minor political formation that participated in national elections. He was elected to the National Assembly in 2012 and, during the transition period following those elections, served as acting President of the Assembly. That interim role, which lasted from late May to late July 2012, coincided with the procedure for constituting the new parliament and the election of a permanent speaker.
Notable facts and significance
Trnavčević’s move from journalism into party leadership is an example of a public figure shifting from media to elected office. His brief tenure as acting President of the National Assembly was largely procedural but placed him at the center of parliamentary formalities during a key post-election interval. Observers noted his visibility as a septuagenarian-turned-parliamentarian and his contribution to debates on rural and local issues through his party’s platform.
Death and legacy
Zaharije Trnavčević died in Belgrade on 13 January 2016 at the age of 90. Reports of his death referred to his long presence in Serbian public life and to the unusual arc of his career—from journalism into national politics during his later years.
