Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a rock band formed in New York in 2000. The band consists of vocalist and pianist Karen O, guitarist and keyboardist Nick Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase.

History

Karen Orzolek (Karen O) and Nicholas "Nick" Zinner formed the band in 2000 as a folk duo under the original name Unitard. After a first drummer left the band, Brian Chase joined the lineup. From their beginnings with acoustic guitar and vocals, the band, inspired by the avant-punk scene in Ohio, increasingly moved to electric guitars and eventually defined their style, which can best be described as indie rock, but is often also classified under art-punk and garage rock.

After supporting gigs for The Strokes and The White Stripes, the band released their first EP titled Yeah Yeah Yeahs in 2001. The EP is sometimes mistakenly called Master because of a necklace with the pendant Master adorning the cover photo. After further appearances with Sleater-Kinney, Liars and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, the second EP Machine was released in 2002.

2003 finally saw the release of their first studio album entitled Fever to Tell on Interscope. The album was received very positively by the critics and was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Alternative Music Album in 2004. According to the British newspaper The Guardian, Fever to Tell has sold more than one million copies.

From the second album Show Your Bones, which followed in autumn 2006, the band was supported by guitarist Imaad Wasif at live performances. The first single from the album was Gold Lion. 2007 saw the release of the EP Is Is.

The release of the third album It's Blitz!, scheduled for April 2009, was brought forward to March 10 after a leak of the album circulated on the internet as early as February. Since the tour for this album, David Pajo has replaced Imaad Wasif as second guitarist in live performances.

The fourth album, titled Mosquito, was released on April 16, 2013.
