Overview
Yanliang District (阎良区, Yánliáng Qū) is an administrative district of Xi'an in Shaanxi province, China. Located to the northeast of Xi'an’s city centre, Yanliang sits roughly 50 kilometres from downtown Xi'an and occupies about 244.55 square kilometres. As of the 2010 census the district had a population of approximately 278,604 people. Its name is traditionally shortened from a longer phrase that conveys a meaning similar to "a good place to live."
Location and surroundings
Geographically Yanliang is positioned at the fringe of Xi'an’s metropolitan area. It borders Weinan Municipality to the east and north, Xianyang Municipality to the west, and Lintong District to the south (Lintong District). This placement gives Yanliang a semi-rural character with strong transport and logistical links to neighbouring cities while retaining distinct industrial zones.
Economy and industry
Yanliang’s economy is closely associated with aviation and aerospace manufacturing. The district hosts major aircraft assembly, testing and research facilities and has long been a centre for China’s airplane production and flight testing. The presence of these heavy industries has supported an ecosystem of suppliers, technical services and vocational training programs. In addition to aerospace, local commerce includes light manufacturing, municipal services and agricultural zones that provide food and materials for nearby urban populations.
Characteristics and infrastructure
- Aerospace hub: A concentration of factories, test fields and engineering teams focused on aircraft development and maintenance.
- Administrative role: Functions as one of Xi'an’s peripheral districts with a mix of industrial and residential areas.
- Population and area: Moderate population density relative to central Xi'an and a land area of about 244.55 km².
History and development
Historically, Yanliang developed around military and aviation installations; those early technical investments shaped its modern role as an aerospace centre. Over time the district expanded civilian manufacturing and support industries, which helped diversify its economy while maintaining a strong technical workforce.
