Benazir Bhutto International Airport (Chaklala)

Former civil airport serving Islamabad–Rawalpindi at Chaklala, Rawalpindi. Shared with the Pakistan Air Force and replaced for civilian use by Islamabad International Airport in May 2018.

Overview

Benazir Bhutto International Airport, commonly referred to as Chaklala, was the principal civil airport serving the Islamabad–Rawalpindi metropolitan area in Pakistan until 2018. Located in the Chaklala area of Rawalpindi, the facility combined civilian passenger services with active military operations and for many years functioned as the principal air gateway for the national capital region. It handled scheduled domestic and international flights, state and VIP movements, and a mix of commercial and government air traffic.

Location and facilities

The airfield lay just outside the administrative limits of Islamabad, within Punjab province, adjacent to the urban area of Rawalpindi. The site included a passenger terminal with the standard components of an airport serving a capital region—check‑in, security screening, immigration and customs facilities for international arrivals, and basic passenger amenities. Operationally, the airport was constrained by its co‑location with military units, which influenced available slots, expansion options and security arrangements.

History and renaming

Originally associated with the nearby Chaklala air base, the airfield evolved from primarily military use into the civil airport for the capital region as Islamabad developed. In the 2000s the civil terminal was renamed to honor Benazir Bhutto. Over time the airport experienced growth in passenger numbers as the capital's administrative and diplomatic activity increased, but physical and operational limits at the site eventually prompted plans for a purpose‑built replacement facility.

Civil and military use

The airfield was shared with Pakistan Air Force transport and liaison squadrons, and military requirements remained central to the site's daily routines. That dual use made Chaklala a frequent arrival point for official delegations, military transport and government VIP flights in addition to scheduled airline services. Even after civil services moved away, military aviation and related government activity continued at the location.

Replacement and later status

To provide greater capacity, modern facilities and room for future growth, civilian operations were transferred to the newly built Islamabad International Airport in May 2018. Since that transfer, the Chaklala site has ceased to operate as a regular commercial passenger airport and has remained important for military aviation and occasional non‑scheduled or official flights.
