Uusimaa (Finnish: Uusimaa, Swedish: Nyland) is a region in southern Finland whose urban core includes the capital city, Helsinki. The area functions as the country’s primary economic and cultural centre and contains several large municipalities such as Espoo and Vantaa. For an official overview see regional information.
Geography and neighbours
Uusimaa stretches along the northern shore of the Baltic Sea and borders the Gulf of Finland to the south. Its coastal position shapes much of the landscape: archipelagos, ports and seaside towns are typical features. The region lies adjacent to several Finnish regions; neighbours include:
The sea connection is important for trade and travel; more about the marine environment is available at the Gulf of Finland page.
History and development
Historically the province of Uusimaa covered a wider territory than the modern administrative region. Settled in medieval times and influenced by Swedish rule for centuries, the area later became part of the Russian Grand Duchy in the 19th century before Finnish independence. Urbanisation accelerated in the 20th century, concentrating people and services around Helsinki.
Population, economy and role
Although Uusimaa represents only a small fraction of Finland’s land area (roughly a few per cent), it is home to the country’s largest population concentration, numbering well over one million residents. The region drives much of Finland’s economy through technology firms, service industries, public administration and maritime commerce. It houses key national institutions, universities and headquarters of major companies.
Language, culture and transport
Uusimaa has a bilingual tradition: Finnish is dominant, while Swedish has an established presence in coastal communities. Cultural life is rich, centred on museums, theatres and festivals in Helsinki and nearby towns. Transport links are extensive: the Helsinki metropolitan area is served by the main international airport, seaports and dense rail and road networks, making Uusimaa the primary gateway for international travel and freight.
