Uzhhorodskyi Raion (Ukrainian: Ужгородський район, Hungarian: Ungvári járás) is an administrative district in Zakarpattia Oblast (oblast) of western Ukraine. Its administrative centre is the city of Uzhhorod, which also serves as the seat of the oblast. The raion occupies a strategic position near the Slovak and Hungarian borders and lies within the Carpathian foothills.
Overview and composition
The raion includes urban, suburban and rural settlements and surrounds the independent city of Uzhhorod. Following Ukraine's 2020 administrative reform the raion's territory was redefined and enlarged to encompass neighboring former districts. It contains a mix of small towns, villages, agricultural land and sections of low mountains and river valleys.
Geography and features
The landscape is marked by the Uzh River valley, rolling hills and forested areas. Soils and climate support vineyards, orchards and mixed farming. The proximity to international borders gives the raion a transnational character and facilitates cross-border trade and travel.
History and cultural context
The area has a layered history under different states and empires, which shaped its architecture, languages and traditions. It is home to diverse communities, including Ukrainian and Hungarian speakers, and retains folk customs, regional cuisine and religious landmarks.
Administration and significance
