Geography and natural features

Covering about 2,004 square kilometres, the United Counties occupy a portion of Eastern Ontario that includes agricultural land, river valleys and provincially significant wetlands. One of the most notable ecological sites is the Alfred Bog, a large peatland that supports a variety of uncommon plants and wildlife. The bog and surrounding habitats host numerous species of birds, orchids and insects, making the area important for conservation, research and low-impact nature tourism.

History and development

Prescott and Russell were originally separate counties; they were administratively joined in 1820 to form the United Counties. Since that early consolidation the region has evolved from frontier and agricultural settlements into a mixed economy with small industry, services and commuter links to larger urban centres. Historic villages and farmsteads remain visible in the built landscape, and the region preserves local heritage through museums and community events.

Demographics, language and culture

The population is concentrated in a range of townships, towns and a small city; historically the area has had a strong Francophone presence. A large portion of residents identify as Franco-Ontarian, and many households use French as their primary language.
