Overview
Unterallgäu is a Landkreis, or rural district, in the administrative region of Swabia within the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany. The district seat and largest town is Mindelheim. Unterallgäu forms part of the broader Allgäu area, known for gently rolling hills, pastures, and a mix of small towns and agricultural countryside.
Geography and municipalities
The district covers predominantly rural terrain at the northern edge of the Allgäu. It comprises a number of towns and municipalities, including well-known localities such as Bad Wörishofen (a spa town) and Ottobeuren (famed for its Benedictine abbey). Rivers and tributaries that cross or skirt the district contribute to its fertile soils; farmland, meadows and woodlands intersperse clustered settlements.
History and culture
Unterallgäu shares the historical traditions of Swabian Bavaria, with a strong Catholic heritage visible in parish churches, monastic foundations and annual festivals. The district in its present administrative form emerged from mid‑20th century territorial reforms in Bavaria; older settlement patterns and local identities remain important. Architectural highlights include baroque and rococo church interiors and preserved market-town centers.
Economy and tourism
The local economy is a mix of agriculture, small and medium-sized enterprises, crafts and tourism. Spa and wellness facilities attract visitors to towns such as Bad Wörishofen, while cultural tourism draws people to monastic sites like Ottobeuren Abbey. Outdoor recreation—cycling, walking and scenic drives in the Allgäu foothills—complements the district’s economic profile.
Administrative borders and neighbouring districts
Unterallgäu borders several Bavarian districts and a pair of districts in the neighboring state of Baden-Württemberg. To the north and east are Bavarian neighbours including Neu-Ulm, Günzburg and Augsburg. Toward the Allgäu proper are Ostallgäu and Oberallgäu. On the western side the district meets Baden-Württemberg districts such as Ravensburg and Biberach. Immediately west of Unterallgäu lies the district-free city of Memmingen. Administratively, Unterallgäu is classed as a rural district and combines governance of towns and smaller municipalities within a regional framework.
For visitors and residents alike Unterallgäu offers a blend of quiet countryside, culturally significant churches and monasteries, spa services, and easy road and rail connections to larger Bavarian centres.
