Overview

Unterstrass is a quarter in District 6 of the city of Zürich. Lying to the north of the historic city centre, it forms one half of District 6 alongside Oberstrass. The area combines residential streets, small commercial strips and public green spaces and is integrated into the wider urban life of Zürich. Basic data record the quarter's area as 2.46 km² and a population of approximately 19,921.

History and development

Until 1893 Unterstrass existed as an independent municipality; in that year it was incorporated into the growing city of Zürich. Since incorporation the neighbourhood evolved from a semi-rural fringe into a dense urban quarter, with 19th- and 20th-century housing developments and more recent infill building. Its growth reflects Zürich's broader suburbanisation and municipal consolidation in the late 19th century.
