History and naming

Planning for the project began under the working name True North Centre. Before and after construction the arena's naming rights changed hands several times. Manitoba Telecom Services purchased the rights early on, after which the building carried the MTS name. Following the acquisition of MTS by Bell Canada, the arena was rebranded under the Bell banner in 2017. On July 15, 2021, a 10-year agreement was announced with Canada Life, resulting in the present name. These naming transitions reflect the common commercial practice of selling naming rights to corporate partners to help fund operations and upgrades.

Resident teams and sporting role

The most prominent tenant is the NHL's Winnipeg Jets, who play their regular-season and playoff home games at the arena. The building has also hosted the city's American Hockey League club, the Manitoba Moose, on two occasions: initially after the arena opened and then again when the franchise returned after a period away. The Moose are part of the AHL, and the team temporarily relocated to St. John's before returning to Winnipeg. Together, these clubs link the venue to both top-level professional hockey and the sport's player-development system.

Although designed principally for ice sports, the venue is built to be flexible. The interior can be reconfigured to host concerts, family shows, conventions and community events, with staging and seating adapted to suit different formats.
