Tsirang District is one of the twenty dzongkhags (districts) of Bhutan, located in the southern part of the country. The district centre is the town of Damphu, which functions as the main administrative and market hub. Geographical coordinates commonly used for the district area are 26°55′N 90°5′E.
Geography and environment
Tsirang occupies a stretch of lower-elevation terrain that transitions between the Himalayan foothills and the sub-tropical plains. The district has a generally milder, warmer climate than Bhutan's highland regions, supporting mixed forests and agricultural land. In some places the Sankosh River runs along the edge of the district and forms part of the boundary with Dagana District.
Administration and settlements
The district is administered from Damphu and is subdivided into local village blocks (gewogs) that provide governance, basic services and local planning. Settlements range from small market towns to rural villages; many communities rely on close links between household farming and local markets.
Economy and land use
Agriculture is the mainstay of life in Tsirang. The fertile soils and favorable climate support paddy, fruit orchards and other cash crops. Small-scale horticulture, including citrus and vegetables, is common alongside subsistence crops. Forestry resources and local trade in agricultural produce also contribute to livelihoods.
Culture and society
Tsirang is home to a mix of communities and languages typical of southern Bhutan, with cultural practices tied to both highland and lowland traditions. Local festivals, community rituals and village structures remain important for social cohesion and identity.
Transport, history and significance
Road connections link Damphu and surrounding villages to Bhutan's national road network, facilitating movement of goods and people. Historically the district has developed through agricultural settlement and gradual administrative consolidation; today it is valued for its productive lowlands, cultural diversity and role as a regional centre in southern Bhutan.
