A stratigraphic column is a graphic summary of rock layers at a location, showing relative order, lithology, age relationships and unconformities for correlation, interpretation, and resource study.

Overview

A stratigraphic column is a diagrammatic representation of the sequence of rock layers (strata) found at a particular place or in a region. It places older units beneath younger ones according to the principle of superposition and often shows lithology, thickness, and major boundaries. Columns are tools for summarizing complex exposures or subsurface logs and for communicating relative and, when possible, absolute age relationships.

Columns typically display named stratigraphic units arranged vertically: beds, members, formations, groups and supergroups. Graphic symbols, colors and patterns indicate rock types (sandstone, shale, limestone), while lines or gaps mark unconformities and marker horizons. Fossil content, radiometric ages, and measured thicknesses may be annotated.
