Steganinae — a subfamily of Drosophilidae

Steganinae is the smaller of two subfamilies within the fruit fly family Drosophilidae, containing a modest number of genera and species distinguished by morphological and molecular traits and ecological diversity.

Steganinae is one of the two principal subfamilies within the fruit fly family Drosophilidae, and is generally regarded as the smaller grouping in terms of described species. The other subfamily is the Drosophilinae. Members of Steganinae are true drosophilid flies but differ from their better-known relatives in a set of anatomical and genetic characters used by taxonomists.

Characteristics

Taxonomists separate Steganinae on the basis of adult morphology and molecular evidence. Diagnostic traits often cited for the group include distinctive structures of the male terminalia and particular features of wing venation and bristle arrangement. These characters are used together with DNA data to resolve relationships within the family.

Diversity and ecology

The subfamily contains a modest number of genera, including the genus Stegana, and is represented across multiple regions worldwide. Like many drosophilids, species in Steganinae occupy saprophagous or fungivorous niches: larvae commonly develop in decaying plant material, fungi, or other fermenting substrates rather than fresh tissues.

Adults are small flies that can be collected from forest litter, rotting fruit, and fungus-bearing substrates. Their life histories and microhabitat preferences contribute to nutrient cycling and the decomposition of organic matter in their ecosystems.

Although much attention in genetic and developmental research focuses on Drosophila species within the Drosophilinae, Steganinae species are important for comparative studies of evolution, systematics, ecology, and biogeography. Ongoing molecular work continues to refine the limits of the subfamily and the relationships among its component genera.
