Overview

Stanisław Stefanek (7 May 1936 – 17 January 2020) was a Polish prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who served in senior pastoral roles for several decades. He was ordained a priest in 1959 and later became an auxiliary and diocesan bishop, most notably leading the Diocese of Łomża from 1996 until his retirement in 2011.

Early life and ordination

Born in Majdan Sobieszczański, Poland, Stefanek entered the priesthood at a time when the Polish Church played a prominent role in civil society. After his ordination in 1959 he served in parish ministry and diocesan assignments, gaining pastoral experience that prepared him for episcopal service. His career reflects the common path from parish priest to higher responsibilities within the Church hierarchy.

Episcopal ministry and roles

Stefanek was appointed an auxiliary bishop of Szczecin–Kamień and held the historical title of titular bishop of Forum Popilii, a customary practice in the Catholic Church for auxiliary bishops. As an auxiliary he assisted the diocesan bishop with confirmations, administration and pastoral oversight. In 1996 he became the bishop of Łomża, a diocese in northeastern Poland, where he led diocesan initiatives, clergy formation and local pastoral programs.

Responsibilities and context

As a diocesan bishop Stefanek was responsible for the spiritual leadership of his flock, oversight of parishes, seminaries and charitable activities, and representation of his diocese in the Polish bishops’ structures. His retirement in 2011 coincided with reaching the canonical age for bishops, when they customarily submit their resignation to the pope.

Retirement and death

After stepping down in 2011, Stefanek retained the title of bishop emeritus and continued to be a presence in church life until his death. He died in Lublin on 17 January 2020 at the age of 83. Reports of his passing noted his long service to the Church and his role in the pastoral life of several Polish dioceses.

Legacy and distinctions

  • Ordained to the priesthood in 1959 and later consecrated a bishop, he served both as an auxiliary and as the diocesan bishop of Łomża.
  • Held the titular see of Forum Popilii, reflecting the Church’s use of ancient diocesan titles for auxiliary bishops.
  • His retirement followed the regular canonical practice for bishops; he spent his final years as bishop emeritus in Poland.
