Overview

Stanisław Jan Konturek (8 October 1931 – 8 August 2019) was a Polish physiologist and gastroenterologist whose career combined clinical practice, teaching and laboratory research. Born in Zakliczyn, he became a leading figure in studies of digestive function and in medical education in Kraków and beyond.

Early life and academic formation

Konturek trained as a physician and pursued academic work that linked basic physiological investigation with problems encountered in clinical gastroenterology. Over a long academic career he held professorial posts at the Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum where he taught medical students, supervised research and participated in clinical care.

Research interests and contributions

His scientific interests concerned the physiology and pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal tract, including mechanisms of secretion, motility and mucosal protection. Konturek examined how neural and hormonal signals regulate digestive processes and how disturbances in these systems contribute to common disorders such as peptic disease and functional bowel conditions. He published and communicated findings that helped bridge laboratory discoveries with clinical management.

Clinical work and teaching

As a clinician-scientist he emphasized the integration of bedside observation with experimental approaches. He was involved in postgraduate teaching and in mentoring younger physicians and researchers, promoting rigorous methods in both physiology and gastroenterology. His students and collaborators carried forward research and clinical programs in digestive diseases.

Memberships and recognition

Konturek was a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) and of the Polish Academy of Learning, reflecting his standing in Poland's scientific community. These memberships acknowledged his contributions to national and international research networks and to the development of medical science in Poland.

Legacy and final years

Throughout his life he maintained links between research, education and clinical medicine. Colleagues remember him for his role in advancing understanding of gastrointestinal physiology and for supporting the professional development of teachers and clinicians. Stanisław Konturek died on 8 August 2019 in Kraków. His career remains an example of the physician-scientist model that integrates patient care with laboratory inquiry.
