Basti division (Urdu: بستی ڈویژن) is an administrative division in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in the northern part of India. As a governmental unit it brings together a cluster of neighbouring districts for coordination of administration, development planning and law-and-order functions. Divisions in Uttar Pradesh typically sit between the state government and the district-level administrations.

Composition and principal places

  • Basti district — headquarters at the town of Basti, which gives the division its name;
  • Sant Kabir Nagar district — named after the 15th‑16th century poet-saint Kabir and containing several religious sites;
  • Siddharthnagar district — a district with historic associations to the life of Gautama Buddha and to the ancient Kosala region.

The divisional headquarters is based in the town of Basti, and the division is served by a Divisional Commissioner who oversees inter-district coordination and state functions at the regional level.

Geography, economy and infrastructure

Basti division lies on the Indo-Gangetic plain and includes parts of the Terai and Uttar Pradesh plains. The landscape is primarily agricultural, with crops such as rice, wheat and sugarcane playing important roles. Small and medium towns support local trade, education and healthcare; transport links include regional roads and rail connections that tie the division to larger urban centres in the state.

History and culture

The area of the division overlaps parts of the historic Awadh (Oudh) and Kosala regions, and has a mixed cultural heritage with Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist influences. District names and local traditions reflect literary and religious figures — for example, Sant Kabir Nagar commemorates Kabir, while Siddharthnagar recalls the region's links to early Buddhist history. Folk arts, festivals and local crafts remain important to community life.

Administration and significance

As an administrative tier, Basti division helps the state government implement policies, coordinate disaster response, and supervise revenue and law-enforcement matters across its districts. It also functions as a planning unit for infrastructure projects and social programmes aimed at improving rural livelihoods and public services.

Notable distinctions include its blend of agricultural economy, historical associations, and the role it plays as a regional hub within northeastern Uttar Pradesh.
