Overview
Sint-Amands is a former municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium, located in the province of Antwerp. Until 2018 it was an independent local government entity and contained three population centres: the riverside town of Sint-Amands proper and the villages of Lippelo and Oppuurs. The locality combined a small residential population with agricultural land and riverside landscapes.

Sint-Amands sits at approximately 51°03′ North, 04°12′ East. The settlement is known for its location close to the banks of the Scheldt, which shaped local land use, transport and leisure activities. In 2007 the population of the municipality was recorded at about 7,819 inhabitants, reflecting its character as a small, dispersed community rather than an urban centre.
Administrative history
Like many small Belgian municipalities, Sint-Amands underwent administrative reorganisation in the 21st century. On 1 January 2019 it was merged with the neighbouring municipality of Puurs to create the new municipality called Puurs-Sint-Amands. The merger reorganised local services, municipal administration and political representation, bringing the three former villages into a larger municipal structure.
Character and local life
The area traditionally combines riverside scenery, small-scale farming and village amenities. Visitors and residents find:
- riverside walking and cycling routes that follow the Scheldt;
- local churches, community halls and small businesses that serve day-to-day needs;
- agricultural fields and hedgerow landscapes in the surrounding countryside.
Notable facts and context
Sint-Amands illustrates a wider trend in Belgium of consolidating small municipalities to improve administrative efficiency and public services. Its riverside setting has influenced settlement patterns and local recreation, and the former municipality continues to be referenced in historical records, local culture and place names despite the 2019 merger.
